This eLearning course provides practical training on the safe and comfortable use of display screen equipment (DSE). Many employees spend significant parts of their day working at computers, and poor DSE setup is a common cause of discomfort, fatigue and longer-term musculoskeletal problems, so understanding how to work comfortably is important for everyone.
The course works through each element of the workstation. It begins with furniture, explaining how to choose and adjust a suitable desk and chair, and how to achieve a healthy posture. It then covers keyboards, including positioning, tilt and technique to reduce strain on the hands, wrists and arms, before looking at pointing devices such as mice and trackballs and how to use them comfortably.
Learners are guided through display screens, including the correct height, distance and angle to avoid eye and neck strain, and the importance of adjusting brightness, contrast and text size. The course also addresses software factors — such as display settings and task design — that can affect comfort and ease of use.
The training then considers the wider working environment, including lighting, glare, noise, temperature and space, all of which influence how comfortable and productive a workstation is. Finally, it explains how to carry out a DSE assessment and how to report and resolve problems. Upon completion, learners will be able to set up and use their workstation in a way that protects their health and wellbeing.
