Launching the CRUX Source of Funds Board Game

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our new Source of Funds board game the latest addition to the CRUX range, built in partnership with Tom Lyes of Tom Lyes Consultancy.

The problem we set out to solve

If you’ve ever looked at your last audit or file review set and wondered why the source of funds assessments don’t match what the team would actually say if you spoke to them, this is for you.

As Tom puts it: source of funds often isn’t really a knowledge problem. It’s a recording problem. People are usually making the right decisions, but they don’t write down their reasoning. That’s backed up rightly or wrongly by the number of SRA fines where no crime has been committed, but the process simply isn’t there. If the thinking isn’t recorded, it doesn’t count. It can’t be checked, and it can’t be defended later.

A game that builds the muscle

So we built a game. A game designed to help fee earners and support staff build the muscle to take their understanding of source of funds analysis and document it in a robust way and to get feedback in the moment, rather than waiting six months or a year for the SRA or your auditor to arrive.

The game is played in pairs, and it’s designed to get people looking at the problem and articulating it as quickly and effectively as they can while having a bit of fun along the way.

Grounded in the real world

This isn’t abstract theory. With Tom’s background including four years at Armalytix helping build one of the leading digital source of funds tools in the market the scenarios are grounded in reality, and E3’s experience in turning training programmes into games means it’s built by people who know the space.

The reason it works is simple: people can get it wrong in the room and use that as a learning tool, rather than getting it wrong in front of a client. After a role-play session last year, Tom saw more engagement over 20 minutes than in a whole string of other sessions combined a clear sign that PowerPoint is not the way forward for this work. It’s the fourth board game in the range, and the early play-testing has already produced plenty of “aha” moments.
